ABB drives are used for several applications in various industrial sectors. In these applications, precise optimization of multi-domain systems during their design and operation is critical to meet the always-increasing efficiency and reliability demands. Achieving this, usually requires extensive design and testing of the drive system utilizing heterogenous, domain-specific modeling and simulation tools, which typically lack common interfaces for model exchange or for co-simulation.

FMI wrapper for multi-domain simulation of ABB drives

Semantum, together with ABB, have developed Virtual Drive FMI Wrapper. This tool provides FMI-based co-simulation capabilities to ABB drives simulation models, available in ABB Drive Composer. FMI (Functional Mock-up Interface) is a simulation standard for model exchange and co-simulation of heterogeneous simulation tools. It is already widely used in automotive and aero-spatial applications and its adoption is increasing in other sectors such as industrial process and automation. .


Virtual Drive FMI Wrapper provides standardized FMI interfaces and functionalities to virtual drives, which are configured and instantiated using ABB Drive composer. This application acts as a bridge between virtual drives and other FMI-capable simulation tools. As a result, virtual drives can be seamlessly interfaced with simulation models developed in other modeling tools. This solution can be used for precise drive design and tuning or for model-based optimization of the drive together with the simulation model of the system where its utilized.
